Building Your Own Corner Raised Garden Bed

Part 1 of 3

Building the Corner Raised Garden Beds is a straight-forward process.

Bill of Material

Two 1″ × 8″ x 6′ boards
Two 1″ × 3″ x 8′ boards
Four 1″ × 2″ x 8′ boards
Two 2′ x 2′ x 8′ studs
Aluminum screen 3′ wide x 60″ long
Screws #6 1-1/4″ ‘gold’ screws, about 1 pound
3/8″ Staples
Sandpaper
Waterproof stain

Some scrap lumber will be left over.

1. Cut Boards for the Box and Shelf Support

Cut Boards

Cut Boards

The garden bed sides are three feet. Using a 1″ x 8″ x 6′ board and with the saw blade set to make a 45° cut, measure the board and mark so that the board will be exactly 36″ from end to the tip of the cut. Then cut the board. This board will be the left side of the garden box.

Using the other side of the cut board, set the saw blade straight up and cut this board to be 35 1/4″ from end to tip.

Do the same with one 1″ x 2″ x 8′ board. Save the left over piece of the 1″ x 2″ x 8′ board to be used later.

At this point there should be one 1″ x 8″ x 36″ board, one 1″ x 8″ x 35 1/4″ board, one 1″ x 2″ x 36″ board, and one 1″ x 2″ x 35 1/4″ board.

2a. Assemble Box Sides

Butt the two 8″ boards to form a 90° joint. The shorter board should overlap the longer board so that from end to end each length is 36″. Clamp the joint (and glue if desired) to hold in place. Screw the joint together with #6 1-1/4″ ‘gold’ screws.

Note that the boards are set with the 45° angle point to the outside. This placement is important.

I made some small jigs to hold the boards straight upright during this process.

This is another view of the joint. The longer board is attached to the shorter board. Two screws are sufficient as one of the legs will be attached to this joint in a later step.

3. Cut and Attach Box Front

Attach Front

Attach Front

Measure the distance across the front from the tip on the left to the tip on the right and cut a length to fit from the other 1″ x 8″ x 6′ board. This is a straight cut. The board should be close to 51″ long. Attach the board across the front with screws (and glue as desired). The resulting triangle is the garden box.

4a. Assemble Bottom Shelf Support

Assemble Shelf Support

Using the 1″ x 2″ x 36″ board and the 1″ x 2″ x 35 1/4″ board from step 1 above, assemble these boards into a 90° square similar to the process in step 2 above. Then cut a length of 1″ x 2″ x 8′ board to go across the front and assemble as in step 3 above. The result is a triangle similar to the garden bed.
